The aim of this paper is to categorize the position of the German language in North Macedonia. Based on the language diversity in the country, first the a) national language policy, which regulates the use of the official languages and the languages of the (ethnic) communities, and then b) the foreign language policy, which promotes the learning of foreign languages in the education system, are considered. Using statistical data and supplementary findings of its own, the study examines German from the perspective of its use as a first, second and foreign language. The study shows that the most important status of German as a second foreign language is anchored in lower and upper secondary education and in adult education. Finally, the question is answered as to whether German in North Macedonia can be characterized as an additional language of society”.

This paper describes the implementation of the Learning how to teach German program (DLL) in the Bachelor's program at the Blaže-Koneski Faculty of Philology of the Ss. Cyril and Method University of Skopje (North Macedonia). It aims to present the experiences and findings on how DLL can be used in university courses for student teachers without teaching experience, based on the DLL concept of advanced education didactics, which is primarily aimed at teachers with teaching experience. The matters of discussion are 1) the use of DLL in the training and professional development of prospective teachers of German as a foreign language at the faculty, 2) an adapted model of integrating DLL into the Bachelor's program, 3) the approaches to supporting students in planning and implementing practice exploration projects, and 4) the results of the evaluation of the courses by tutors and students. The study shows that DLL can be implemented in teacher training even with students having no teaching practice yet, but requires considerable additional time and more intensive supervision.
