Four unknown throne icons are presented from the church Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos in Epanomi – Thessaloniki, painted by Dičo Zograf in 1865 and 1866 are presented in this text. At the same time, the entire work of Dičo in the years in which these icons are painted is also followed in the text. Among the many writings of Theophylact of Ohrid is his Address to one of his disciples on the charges against the Latins. In this work, the Archbishop of Ohrid presents his views on current dogmatic and ritual issu es and problems that existed in his time between the Byzantine East and the Latin West. In addition to more precise dating of this work, this study aims to present the original theological thoughts of Theophylact, which differ dramatically from the views of most of his contemporaries in the East. Be cause inter-confessional dialogue is particularly relevant today, many of the practical solutions Theophylact offers to his contemporaries may serve as a model for resolving contemporary open theological issues.

Црковните прилики во Охридската епархија во втората половина на XIX век

The second half of the 19th century is a particularly turbulent period in the history of the Ohrid Diocese. As a key event of this period should be singled out the strong struggle of the indigenous population for church independence, inspired by the memories of the once glorious Ohrid Archbishopric. This long and arduous process began with the revolt against the foreign immature bishopric imposed by the Patriarchate and the partial success achieved by obtaining a people’s bishop in the person of Exarchate Metropolitan Nathaniel Kucevishki and his successors, who with the exception of Gregorius, were from Macedonia. However, the popular struggle of the indigenous Macedonian population in the Ohrid Diocese did not stop here, but continued further, overcoming the new challenges. One of these challenges was the Serbian pro paganda, which will not have much success in the Ohrid Diocese, whose population will remain for the most part under the jurisdiction of the Exarchate until the Balkan Wars. All these turbulent processes from the second half of the XIX century, led to the maturation of the Macedonian self-awareness of the population in the Ohrid Diocese, which in the following century continued its struggle for even more intense spiritual and national independence.

Одразот на верската идеологија на Михаил VIII Палеолог врз Охридската архиепископија
    (Институт за национална историја, 2022)
    Nedeski, Viktor
The participation of representatives of the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaeologus at the Council of Lyon in 1274. was a diplomatic triumph for the emperor. His acceptance of all the demands of the Pontifical throne prevented the organization of a crusade of the Western countries against the still unstable restored empire. But the ecclesiastical and theological consequences of the political goals of the emperor’s religious ideology shook the empire for almost a decade. In this new ecclesiastical-political situation in the already united Byzantine Empire, the question arises as to the position of the Ohrid Archbishopric regarding the religious ideology and policy of Michael VIII towards Western Christianity and how these processes reflected on the Ohrid throne.

Martyrdom is a manifestation of the suffering and death of Christians for their faith. This phenomenon dates back to the earliest history of the Chris tian Church. During the Ottoman rule in the Balkans, martyrdom became rel evant again in the form of the “new martyrs”. A special group of new martyrs is made up of Christians who have converted and later repented. In order to be forgiven for the sin they had committed, they became “self-initiated martyrs” by voluntarily resorting to martyrdom. The group of “self-initiated martyrs of the apostates” whose representatives are found among all the peoples of the Balkans is the topic of interest of this research.

The main topic of the epistles of Leo of Ohrid addressed to the bishop John of Trani is the question of the nature of the Eucharistic bread. However, apart from this practice, Leo criticizes other errors of the Latins such as: fasting on Sabbath, eating strangled animals, and not chanting Alleluia during Lent. This research aims to expose these secondary remarks of Leo and to examine the genesis and development of these practices among the Latins, as well as their a reflection in the rest of the anti-Latin literature in Byzantium.

The iconographic program of the oldest frescoes in the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Ohrid is another indication of the spiritual and theological greatness of Archbishop Leo of Ohrid. As archbishop, Leo undoubtedly clashed with Latin worship practices previously imposed on the territories of his jurisdiction by Western missionaries. It actually confirms the need for Leo to express his theological views on some Latin practices on the walls of St. Sophia of Ohrid.

The "Stemmatographia" of one of the first Macedonian revivalists, Hristofor Zhefarovich, is one of the most significant monuments of South Slav culture in the 18th century. This small but rich and luxurious chalcography book featuring the coats of arms and figures of the rulers and saints, written in Church Slavic language with Russian redaction, was not only a template for engravers and iconographers, but had and still has a profound impact on the understanding of the creation of nati ons in the Balkans. It carries multiple messages that have been interpreted to this day, and some of them have been interpreted differently in different national-politi cal contexts and tendencies. Among the portraits of the South Slavic saints in the Stematography of Hris tofor Zhefarovich are the portraits of St. David the King and St. Theoctist. Of particu lar interest in identifying the two mentioned portraits is another Zefarovich's chalco graphy from the same 1741 which was made just months before the publication of his "Stemmatographia". In the image of St. David clearly is identified, the Serbian nobleman Dimitrij Nemanjic, son of Vukan, nephew of Stefan Nemanjic. As a monk David, he is revered as a saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church and founder of the Davidovica monastery in southwestern Serbia. Paisius of Hilendar baselessly linked the image of "Saint Da vid the King of Bulgaria" with David - brother of Samuel. The character of the monk Theoctist, on the other hand, is identified as King Stefan Dragutin Nemanjic, son of Stefan Uros I, and nephew of Stefan the First-Crow ned. At the end of his life, Dragutin became a monk with the monastic name Theo ctist. In the character of Theoctist, Paisius again baselessly recognized the Bulgarian ruler, King Trivelius or Tervel.

Immediately after the First Ecumenical Council (325 A. D.), the question of the completeness of the human nature of Jesus Christ was raised by the Arian Anomians, who claimed that the Word of God received only a “soulless body,” that is, that it took the place of the soul in man. Apollinarius of Laodicea tried to answer the question of the completeness of the human nature of the Lord Jesus Christ. The phrase of Apollinarius is characteristic: “one incarnate nature of the Word” which is stated in his confession to Jovian. This phrase is widely used by St. Cyril of Alexandria, who, according to most scholars, considered it a phrase of St. Athanasius the Great. St. Cyril gives an Orthodox interpretation to this controversial phrase, freeing it from any apollinaristic teaching. The Alexandrian father meant that Christ was one person with two perfect natures, divine and human, rejecting all forms of monophysitism. Thus, only as a perfect God and man, Jesus Christ can save man from death and sin and reconcile him with God - something that the first Adam failed to do.
