Abstract: This text aims to underline the very nature of grotesque, its qualities, and literary theory that highlight its peculiarities (Bakhtin, Hugo, Kaiser, etc.). Grotesque is being defined as a sort of mixture that comprises of diverse elements, in order to provoke artistic heterogeneity. Seen through historically remote literary works, grotesque is a form of depiction, which catalyzes generic transformation and the correlation of different genres, and it is being transformed at the same time. The means of grotesque depiction vary from character building and humor in Aristophanes, to reconstruction of characters and dramatic/novelistic situations in Plautus and Cervantes. These examples illustrate the aesthetic essence of grotesque, recreated through Plato’s imaginations of Eros.
