Abstract: This scientific work focuses on the strategic management in the public sector and the specific challenges and problems that concern the public sector in the Republic of Macedonia which is highly criticised nowadays by the public for its inefficiency, unprofessionalism, and the poor contribution to the creation of public goods. The public sector in the Republic of Macedonia has long been highly influenced by the process of transition of the economy. The reform process has often been made spontaneously and without previous researches or comparative analyses that would contribute to good legal regulation or setting up of, so-called, good management practices. The strategic Management as a relatively new discipline has not found a good space to be used in the public sector to give results in faster step forward in the process of overall changes to the whole economic system. The challenges of today require good planning above all , clearly specified objectives, accurate and precise planning of resources in order to provide better services and goods to the end users . The beginnings of the strategic management usage first appear in the private a sector which according to the structural setup and management easily adapts to the changes in the environment. The public sector according to the size and the number of tasks it performs cannot be compared with the private sector so that it needs more time for the process of changing and adaptation to the new models and methods of managing. It should also be taken into account that most of the placements of human resources and management structures in the public sector are heavily influenced by various political structures which are conceptually different. The challenge of this scientific work is also the way of making decisions that have an impact on the organizational effectiveness and efficiency of the entire public system in the Republic of Macedonia.
