Abstract
Investments in business cooperation increased constantly in the past few years. They are known under many names: strategic alliances, joint ventures, partnerships, consortia, coalitions, etc. In general, no matter under what names these activities are known, companies cooperate and join their resources to do something that they are unable to do alone. The capability for cooperation takes the central place in the competitive strategies of many global industries. As these partnerships spread, they start to change the shape of competition between the global players. Actually, collaboration is already linked intricately with the competition. In the past few years, strategic alliance formation has increased significantly within the technologically advanced industries. As a result, these partnerships became increasingly popular in the strategic management literature. The topic of this research is to analyze strategic alliances between competitors with a focus on the steel industry and mining in the Republic of Macedonia. The study observes interactions between partnerships and competition and how partnerships tend to change the standard form of competition. The goal of the study, mainly, is to research and analyze the possibilities for forming strategic alliances between competitors in the steel industry and mining in the Republic of Macedonia, taking into account, the experiences from forming such partnerships in these industries in the world. The research also examines and emphasizes the complexity of forming strategic alliances, reasons for their creation and relationships that are being set up between the partners. This research also aims to find out potential effects of strategic alliances on the steel industry and mining structure and competitiveness in the Republic of Macedonia.
