Abstract
The impressive list of works by Katica Kulavkova, both prose and poetic, represents
a testimony of her significance and contribution to the Macedonian cultural tradition.
As a member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (since 2003),
and a manager of a variety of international scientific projects, Katica Kulavkova has
received many acknowledgments for her literary and critic works, which additionally
confirm the unavoidable relevance of her work. As Marija Gjorgjieva-Dimova
points out, Kulavkova’s appearance in the Macedonian literature happens in the
1970s, and it is underlined by her specific and innovative artistic style and expression.
She varies the traditional models on linguistic, generic, and motif levels. By
transgressing the norms of literary and non-literary kinds, Kulavkova paves the way
of her specific style in two intriguing and extraordinary works (Macedonian Hard
Times and All the Facets of Discourse) that additionally develop the idea of generic
overlap and represent the manner by which different genres communicate with each
other. The first book is a collection of interviews that embody the Macedonian social
and cultural reality in an autoreferential and metahistorical way. It is a kind of “dialogical”
or “reflected” history, which ponders into the construction of the representation
of Macedonian reality, and its fragmentation (or “balkanization”) in cultural
and historical sense. The book envisages a different approach to the whole paradigm
of the experienced and the written fact. On the other hand, the work All the Facets
of Discourse is a kind of addition to the previously defined historical perspective,
schematizing the discrete aspects of dialogue (discourse). This book is a fascinating
testimony of the transformation of spoken word into a written one, thus representing
its generic, stylistic and creative potential.
