Abstract
The organised gathering of women in societies in Macedonian science has not
been the subject of special research, and that is exactly why in this paper we are dealing
with the emergence and development of women’s societies in Macedonia in the 19th
century. These societies appeared thanks to the emancipation of Macedonian women
in public life, which was primarily stimulated by education, that is, by the opening of a
large number of women’s schools. From them came a significant number of educated
women who engaged in opening Sunday schools, which grew into women’s societies
in the larger Macedonian cities of that time: Ohrid, Struga, Thessaloniki, Nevrokop,
etc. In the beginning, their activity was only educational in nature, later they were
revolutionised and joined the Macedonian revolutionary movement. In addition,
women’s societies had a humanitarian character, helping their poor or sick fellow
citizens. With the emergence of women’s societies, the interest in reading works by
the classics, such as Molière, Goethe, Tolstoy, etc. increased, and we also connect the
appearance of Macedonian female authors from this period, which is precisely why
we consider them extremely important in general for the advancement of the status of
women in the societies of that time.
