The text is an attempt to interpret the novel Desert by Gjorgi Abadijev through some of the basic concepts of the philosophy of existentialism, more precisely through the premises presented in The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus. The analysis of the novel focuses on comparing the ways in which the two main characters, Gligor and Arso, both sentenced to a life imprisonment, accept (or are unable to accept) the absurdity of existence, rely on hope or reject it with contempt, strive for freedom or give it up as something unattainable, choose life or death. The text thus indicates that Abadziev’s novel was created in the context of existentialist trends in literature, current in the European culture at the time when Desert was written. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
In this paper, we refer to a polemic from 1898 in which the teacher Evtimica Jancheva from the town of Voden took part. The polemic developed as a response to two texts in which the authors criticised women, especially teachers, for their attitude towards fashion and work. Jancheva's extensive text, published in the newspaper Novini, in the section Correspondence, defends the right of women to be teachers, to follow the latest fashion trends, etc. In this way, the article by Evtimica Jancheva is the first registered polemical writing in Macedonian literature, in which a woman had taken part, while Evtimca Jancheva is considered to be the first Macedonian woman to take part in a public polemic. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
In this paper we analyze the depictions of hell and the devil in Macedonian folklore from the 19th century by comparing several mediums: folk songs, stories, curses, proverbs, etc. Adam and Eve’s exile from Paradise marks the first internal and external exile in the history of mankind. In light of this, we focus on numerous descriptions of hell as a place full of fire in which sinners are exposed to torments, and of the image of the devil as a master of evil. In this context, we look at different names for hell and the devil that represent social and spiritual apostasy and disapproval of existing ethical and moral norms. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, KILLING OF THE ELDERLY: THE MACEDONIAN CUSTOM “SLAUGHTER OF THE OLD MEN”(2024)Славчо КовилоскиThis paper addresses the problem of killing of elderly people, a custom commonly referred to as "slaughtering the elderly" in Macedonia. Examples of this myth are registered across various regions of Macedonia, including Ohrid, Bitola, Prilep, Veles, Skopje and the surrounding areas, Dojran, the surroundings of Kratovo, Negotino, Debar, Drimkol, and the expansive hilly-mountainous regions of Maleshevo and Mariovo. The motivations behind senicide were numerous. It was commonly thought that during times of famine, killing of the elderly was a means of conserving scarce food resources. In addition, senicide occurred as a result of land confiscation, where the property or cultivation rights of the elderly were transferred to their younger generations. In some cases, these killing were considered an act of mercy, especially when an individual suffered from an incurable disease, or faced the challenges of old age, when people could not meet even their most basic biological needs, thus becoming a burden to the family or the community. The traumatic experience of sons killing their fathers, according to traditions, led to the abandonment of this brutal custom. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
The noted speeches of Macedonian teachers in the nineteenth century indicate that their consciousness has gone beyond the traditional patriarchal way of thinking. They demanded the right to education and emancipation in society. Their views, paraphrased by correspondents, show the degree of development of womеn's thought in Macedonia at the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX century. Having into consideration the situation with women's education and female voicelessness just about ten years before the end of the century, we can conclude that great progress has been made in the suppression of illiteracy and voicelessness. The public performances of the Macedonian teachers were also of great importance for this. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
In this paper, we shall address the issue of pseudonymity in Macedonian literature. We shall focus on the process of collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing unsigned works or those signed with hidden names, initials, graphic signs, etc. We categorize them into several groups (cryptonyms, collective pseudonyms, geonyms or troponyms, latinisms, phytonyms, etc). We shall present these observations as an example of the possibilities for further research in the field of pseudonymy, as well as the need to clarify the necessities and the ways to write under a hidden name. We consider this work as a relevant basis for providing insight into the complexity of the issue of Macedonian literary pseudonyms. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

She was the most significant informant of Stefan Verkovich, who had written a number of songs from her, of which 275 have been determined so far.
