Abstract
This paper gives a brief overview of the current status in hotel industry in Macedonia, with
particular emphasis on environmental awareness for increasing energy efficiency, presenting how
hotels can become "green". A case study of the Hotel “Manastir” in Berovo presents an analysis
of energy consumption and its reduction.
Guidelines are given on how appropriate implementation of the proposed measures and
methodologies can significantly reduce energy costs and financial burden, indirectly reduce the
production of electricity from conventional‐fossil energy sources and reduce emission of harmful
gases. Through several methodological approaches, this paper concludes that the concept of
"green hotel" is well‐known in the hotel industry in Macedonia. Good management, keeping
regular records of consumption and costs over a long period of time and comparing data, can
identify gaps and take appropriate measures to improve the efficiency of the hotel, thus making a
benefit to the hotel and the environment, both.
