Abstract
CULTURAL TIES BETWEEN THE BALKANS AND THE TURKIC WORLD
Throughout its history, the Balkans have been under the administrative rule of the Roman
Empire, Byzantium, the Bulgarian Kingdom, the Serbian Kingdom, and the Ottoman Empire,
and each nation has been influenced by the official languages of these administrations. The
region has also been affected by the languages within the Balkan linguistic unity through direct
or indirect contact. In Macedonia, the longest-lasting administration was that of the Ottoman
Empire, which ruled for 541 years (1371–1912), leaving deep marks in every aspect of life. The
Balkans have historically been a crossroads of various cultures and civilizations, resulting in a
rich and diverse cultural mosaic. The Turks, especially during the Ottoman period, formed a
significant population in the Balkans and made substantial contributions to the region's cultural,
social, and economic structure. This article examines the cultural dimensions of integration
between the Balkans and the Turkic world, the significance of the Turkic world, and the role of
the Balkans in the context of a common alphabet.
