Abstract
Various theories in international relations offer multiple models of explanation of relations between states, but most of them are based on the idea that states act in accordance with their national interests. In fact, in its essence, state interests include the need to maintain security, sovereignty and the development of the economy. Reaching the best national interests of states often involves influencing other countries of all kinds, which can lead to disagreements, conflicts and even wars between states. The concepts of war and peace are a special topic of interest for the two dominant theories of international relations – idealism and realism, which offer special explanations for the state of war, that is, the peace that evolves over time, for today they have a special shape, according to the development of the international relations and especially after the catastrophic developments on the international scene, at the beginning of the twentieth century. The two theories come from several main tenets, which in this paper will be thoroughly analyzed in order to determine their advantages and disadvantages in contemporary international relations.
