Abstract
The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce is a novel which incoporates all the main discourses and ideologies that have contributed to the establishment of the modern Irish identity, such as: religion, language, family, politics, tradition. However, it is also a forum in which all these different discourse engage in a dialogue and give birth to the voice and identity of its main character, Stephen Dedalus. Through the dialogue with these different discourses, he incorporates, but also deconstructs and outgrows them, on his path to forge a new and disctinct voice, that of the age of Modernism. However, in our paper we have focused on a brief analysis of his dialogue with the discourse of the nation in order to illustrate this productive narrative process, which has made this novel one of the most important works of 20th century English literature.
