Abstract
In the context of globalization, companies face pressure to constantly innovate in order to maintain their competitiveness. For that purpose, they use patent protection as a powerful tool for enhancing inventions and innovations. Patent enables exclusive rights to the patent holder for the entire duration of the patent protection in the territory where it is requested. Hence the main purpose of patenting is the commercialization of the patented inventions which generates a profit for the patent holder. Unlike the patent protection procedure, which is an administrative procedure before a competent authority in the territory where the protection of the right is requested, commercialization is a dynamic process that is influenced by certain complex factors, which often results in the absence of the commercialization and the expected positive financial effects for the innovator and beyond. In that sense, the main objective of this doctoral dissertation is identification and analysis of the influential factors and the dynamic connections between them as well as optimization of the patent commercialization process. The system dynamics approach is used for the realization of the dissertation objectives. This means determining the relationships between the influencing factors and creating a simulation model that will be experimented with in order to optimize the patent commercialization process with the focus on the types of patents that are commercialized in own existing company, on the level of country, in furniture industry. The paper additionally focuses on the impact of the distribution of the external support on the generated and commercialized number of patents, as well as the realized profit from the commercialization. The results show that for each level of the total external support there is an optimal number of supported patents that will receive external support which gives the maximum number of generated and commercialized patents, as well as maximum profit from the commercialization process. In that sense, the total external financial sources should be distributed between bigger number of patents, which provides optimal results. Consequently the application of the simulation model enables the creation of optimal policies as well as the correct decision making under given circumstances and conditions.
