Abstract
Leaders are frequently required to lead changes in the organizations due to restructuring, mergers or entering new international markets where the new initiatives require effective change leadership. Frequent changes in the business world have become the rule instead of the exception. Hence, the role of the leader is especially important in determining the need, implementation and monitoring the change throughout all of the phases in the organization. The theoretical part of the doctorial thesis reviews the nature of leadership, the framework for analyzing leadership, the approaches to leadership, and the role of women in leadership. After that the development of leaders is analyzed through reviewing the personal types of leadership. Finally the literature review is competed with analysis of with the connection between organizational changes and leadership, which focus on the models of change, leading change in the organization, creating a vision, managing the organizational culture, conflict management, negotiations, diagnosing individual, group and organizational problems and building teams. In the empirical part of the doctorial thesis an empirical research is conducted with emphasis on several different aspects including the change management process, personal skills for managing change, values and beliefs connected with change, the leadership styles, and the influence of the leadership styles on the effective change management with the intention to determine the situation of leadership in managing change in the enterprises in the Republic of Macedonia. The results of the empirical research suggest that the modern leadership styles have a positive effect on the effective change management, i.e. there is a connection and mutual influence between the modern styles of leadership and effective change management. The results of the research also show that the leaders in the enterprises in the Republic of Macedonia show hybrid characteristics of transformational and transactional leadership, where the leaders at the same time expect their followers to be open and share their thoughts, but they also expect productivity, commitment and responsibility.
