This chapter considers the trend of human development in the RNM, presented through the HDI. The special focus would be the links with the problem of poverty and inequality in the economy, regarding the data for the GINI, IHDI, GDI, poverty line, MPI, vulnerable employment, and youth unemployment. The research subject is the period from 2010 to 2017, using the secondary statistical data. Comparative analysis, with the countries from the CESEE countries, further improve the quality of the chapter. The RNM is a country with a high level of human development, and it is relatively equally distributed among the population. There is a difference in the distribution of the achievements of HD and an intermediate level of equality in the distribution between the genders. Income inequality expressed with the GINI index shows increase. The results confirm that there is no automatic link between the economic growth and human development. Income and gender inequality regress the quality of life in Macedonia. Growth in RNM in the past period has failed to produce the expected positive effects.

    FINANCIAL SUPPORT IN AGRICULTURE DURING PANDEMIC IN REPUBLIC OF NORTH MACEDONIA
    (Institute of Economic Sciences, 2023)
    Katerina Hadzi Naumova-Mihajlovska, Neda Petroska-Angelovska, Marija Takovska
    The agriculture sector in North Macedonia during pandemic was strongly influenced by market restrictions, lack of seasonal workers, restriction of movement, difficulties in the organization of transport and logistics. On the other hand, it shows greater resilience compared to other economic segments during the restrictions introduced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The economic downturn, however, exacerbated the financial vulnerability of smallholder farms, drastically reducing available sources of income and employment. While the sources of financing in agriculture in North Macedonia are already poor, the global pandemic impact would result in the sort of collapse for the current trend. Thus, this paper focuses on how the impact of pandemic can be turned into an opportunity to boost agriculture financing to make the sector more resilient to it. Main purpose of the paper is to analyses the impact of restrictions introduced during COVID-19 pandemic and the implemented measures regarding the financial support in agricultural sector in North Macedonia in the period. Therefore, the methodology of research is based on qualitative and quantitative analyses of agricultural financing based on official data. Analyses show that the measures to mitigate the effects of a pandemic are short-lasting and inadequately designed for agriculture. Therefore, it’s important the need for a multidimensional approach and financial instruments to reinforce resilience in the agricultural sector. That means: facilitating access to financing sources, expanding their scope, and especially important is the strategic approach in financing the production of agricultural crops that are crucial in crisis conditions, such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

    China’s Trade and Investment in the Western Balkans Under the Belt and Road Initiative: Focus on North Macedonia
    (IGI Global, USA, 2022-06)
    Iskra Stanceva-Gigov, Klimentina Poposka
    The China Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the 17+1 cooperation platform, as an integral part of it, is the key framework for China’s foreign policy towards most parts of the world, including the Western Balkans (WB). Through its global initiative and cooperation platform, China creates a range of opportunities for facilitating trade and increasing export, financial integration and greater Chinese investment, major infrastructure projects, as well as their funding. This chapter analyzes the real situation regarding these aspects in the WB countries, especially focused on North Macedonia. The analysis indicates that there has been some progress in co-operation, but the WB countries (excluding Serbia) have failed to maximize their interests either in bilateral co-operation or in the framework of the BRI initiative and the 17+1 platform. Conclusively, despite all the great expectations, the trade exchange, Chinese investments, and the realized infrastructure projects do not reach a significant level.

    Продуктивна или главна активност на населението како индикатор за квалитет на живот

    Индикаторот продуктивната или главна активност на населението претставува еден од деветте индикатори за квалитетот на животот кои ги објавува Еуростат за потребите на Европската унија. Овој индикатор се однесува, од една страна, на работата на вработените, на самовработените лица или на неплатените семејни работници, која што се плаќа, а од друга страна ја опфаќа и неплатената работа (грижа за членовите на семејството или волонтирање) и други видови статус на главна активност (на пример, студирање или пензионирање). Врз основа на параметрите кои ги дава Еуростат и кои го оформуваат индикаторот, во рамки на овој дел од монографијата се анализира продуктивната или главна активност на населението во Република Северна Македонија. За таа цел земени се предвид одделни аспекти на квантитетот и квалитетот на вработеноста во земјата, за последните десет години, при што е опфатено работоспособното население на возраст од 15-64 години. Истовремено, направена е споредба со состојбите во ЕУ-27 (без Велика Британија). Како извор на податоци се користи базата на Еуростат за да се избегне методолошка неусогласност, која може да се јави доколку се користат различни извори на податоци.

    Determinants of employee skills’ level and utilization in SMEs in the Republic of North Macedonia
    (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2021)
    Piperkova, Irina
    ;
    ;
    Recent research shows that continuous skill upgrading is paramount to achieving competitiveness and sustainability for individuals in the labour market and firms. Due to the dynamic business changes, firms expect higher levels of creativity, innovation, and initiative from their employees, hence ensure that they possess cutting-edge knowledge, skills, and abilities. Nevertheless, firms cannot capitalize solely on employees’ skills i.e., the full utilization of employees’ skills is necessary to achieve competitiveness. Thus, the determinants that influence the level and utilization of employee skills are crucial for firms as well. In this paper, the recruitment process and training are recognized as factors that affect skill level whereas the methods of motivation determine skill utilization. The results of the empirical analysis on a sample of SMEs in the Republic of North Macedonia indicate that the challenges firms face during the process of recruitment pertain to the lack of applicants’ skills and the small number of applicants. Also, almost 60% of the firms either announce only primary vacancy requirements or, although thoroughly defined, do not include the requirements in the vacancy announcement. As for the upgrading of skills, about 50% of the firms had organized one to three training sessions in the last three years, mainly pertaining to the improvement of job-specific skills of primary employees. Almost one-fifth of firms had not organized any training. The motivation methods are highly important not only to boost employees’ willingness to upgrade their skills but also to fully utilize them in their working activities. The findings indicate that more than half of the firms motivate their employees by providing bonuses and rewards, and by taking employees’ opinion into account. An additional motivating factor refers to employee participation; in particular, including employees in the process of new product/service development.
