    THE IMPACT OF THE POLITICAL CRISIS ON SMALL AND LARGE FIRMS IN THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA
    (2018-03)
    ;
    ;
    The recent political instability in the Republic of Macedonia has taken its toll on the business sector. During political instability, firms tend to postpone any major decision regarding future projects or investments as a result of changes in firms’ business perceptions and lack of predictability of future policies and trends. In this regard, a research was conducted among small, medium and large firms in the Republic of Macedonia in order to investigate the main consequences of the political crisis in the past few years on the business sector. The research findings reveal that the most severe implications of the political instability on businesses pertain to lack of long-term planning, decline in sales, increased difficulties related to collection of claims and implementation of ongoing contracts, and reluctance to conduct planned investments and recruitments. Results have also highlighted major differences between small and large firms in regard to perceived consequences of the political instability. Research on the effects of political instability on businesses is rather scarce in literature. Hence, the findings of this research are of particular importance for improving the knowledge about the potential implications of political instability on businesses and for identifying the main challenges that businesses face.

    The latest technological developments have subsequently impacted businesses imposing changes to the methods of production and the patterns of employment. Businesses are becoming heavily depended on new technologies and strive to invest in latest technology so as to leverage it in increasing productivity and innovation. To capitalize on the opportunities that have been created with the high-tech solutions, businesses require digitally skilled workers who can use advanced technology in daily business operations. Since advance technology has dispersed across many industries and occupations, the demand for digital skills has dramatically increased in most sectors of the economy. Many emerging jobs involve work activities that require a complementary skillset of advanced digital skills, problem-solving and technical skills, and entrepreneurial or business skills. Developing the required skills for the digital age in the region leaves much to be desired. The curricula in education institutions should be revised, modern teaching methods should be introduced and critical thinking, creativity and problem solving should be encouraged among students. Using a set of digital tools in formal education as an integral part of the learning process will foster digital skills excellence among future workers.

    The public sector has a certain role in the economy of each country, depending on the organization of the country as a society. Its two fundamental functions, reallocation and redistribution reflect its economic and social dimension, which concerns everyone in the country. Change is what provides the possibility for something new and different, it will give new value both in the economic and social sense of the public sector.The public sector has to be open to the introduction of changes, to have cultural values in order to see changes as a possibility, and not as a threat. In the essence of entrepreneurship are creativity and innovations of entrepreneurial behavior. Entrepreneurship is a dynamic process of creating a value of a certain activity, it is based on the same principles in the private sector and in the public sector. The public sector faces problems that are different from the private sector, so other knowledge is needed, “innovation for the public interest” is needed.

    (Institute of Economics – Skopje, 2019)

    Krstic Tasheva, Violeta
    Economic growth, increased consumption and irrational use of natural resources negatively affect the environment. Respecting resource constraints, the need to gradually change the existing unsustainable production and consumption model is emerging as one of the key challenges of sustainable development. The amount of waste is constantly increasing, and the characteristics of the waste are constantly changing in direction of its degradation, but also its negative impact on the environment, and thus the quality of life. The resource limitations, on the other hand, create an noncompetitive business environment, and this is a challenge to finding innovative technologies that will allow waste to be transformed into a resource. The aim of the research is waste as an opportunity for resource efficiency and “green” economy in North Macedonia. The survey shows that by increasing resource efficiency provides circular economic solutions that can generate economic growth and “green” jobs, and business entities increase their productivity and competitiveness.

    Barriers of implementing open innovations in Macedonian SME’s
    (Economic Development, Journal of the Institute of Economics – Skopje, 2015-12)
    ;
    ;
    Open innovation is a concept of growing acceptance in the field of innovation management. It is based on the idea that companies can leverage the knowledge generated externally to improve their innovation performance. Shorter innovation cycles, the rising costs of industrial research and development, and a lack of resources have motivated many organizations to change their innovation strategies towards implementing open innovations. However managing open innovation process in SMEs is more difficult and complex than it is the case with large enterprises. The reasons behind the low integration of the open innovations in SMEs generally can be found in their limited organizational, financial and human resources. By conducting a survey among 63 SMEs in Republic of Macedonia, current open innovation practices and barriers are searched. Findings revealed that the low capacity of the SMEs to deal with the open innovation process, low awareness of the benefits of the open innovation process, and lack of knowledge on protection of intellectual property rights are concluded as the main constraints in adapting open innovation practices.
