Abstract: Alice in Wonderland has been translated into Macedonian by different translators five times: in 1957, 1987, 2009, 2013 and 2018. The differences in the translations are evident not just in the prose text and the ways in which the wordplay has been translated, but it is most visible in the translations of Carroll’s carefully crafted nonsense poems. This paper offers a comparative analysis of the five translations of the poems by providing insight into the translators’ choice in rhythm, rhyme and lexis. The analysis further comments on how the translation choices are affected by the demand for the book, as well as translation policies imposed by the state.
