Abstract: This paper examines the problem of academic production of works on Ancient Macedonia in the period of the SR of Macedonia. While it is obvious that the production was not satisfactory – at least not in quantity – it is maintained that the interest for Classical Antiquity was not suppressed, as some might argue; this can best be seen by the publication of Živa Antika, whose role and importance in the promotion of classical studies must not be taken lightly. At the same time, it is shown that the neglect of ancient Macedonia in the academic circles, especially prior to the rule of Philip II, was in no way restricted to the Macedonian and Yugoslav historical production.
