Abstract
Social work as an emerging profession is in continual change and yet to settle on a definition of itself, though there is a consensus when it comes to its role in and impact on society. This study seeks to shed light on the theoretical background surrounding the social work profession, including the roles therein and their development over the years, and its perception or image as social work. Because of the constantly evolving perception of social work, this study also endeavors to focus on the debates and research findings regarding typical stereotypes that envelop the profession. This study is generally designated as a research consolidation paper seeking to analyze current theoretical debates regarding the role, image, and stereotypes of the social work profession, both objective-oriented and as perceived by various social groups. Furthermore, it examines these theories in a country-specific manner, focusing on the actual role and function of social workers in North Macedonia and Kosovo, and the perceived public opinion about the role, image, and stereotypes for such relatively new professions in these countries.
