Abstract
The ablaut or vowel gradation is an important feature of the Indo-European language family. However, in order to simplify the inflexion of nominals and verbs there is a continuous tendency to reduce the ablaut functions in all languages, including the Macedonian language. It has been observed that in the Macedonian language the vowel gradation is actively used to express verbal aspects, but that the ablaut is no more functional in the formation of nominals. The analysis conducted for the purposes of this work shows that in the contemporary Macedonian language the primary function of the ablaut in the formation of nominals is no longer visible. Nevertheless, the nouns and the adjectives which are marked with specific ablaut grades remain to be an unchanged and stable group of words, in spite of the continuous development of the language and the tendencies to level the different ablaut grades of nouns and verbs. These nouns and adjectives in the course of time have become basis for the formation of many new words using suffixes. The analysis shows that thus created models for word formation are still functional, and so is the ablaut.
