Abstract
Through the concept of Love and Strife, which are defined as cosmological forces, forces of attraction and repulsion, Empedocles understands the cosmos as infinitely pulsing Sphere, which cyclically varies from state of total unity to state of total disunity. Empedocles postulates cosmology that separates the concept of force and the concept of the fundamental constituent parts of the world. That is cosmogony which is not act of Love, namely cosmogony that is not a result of the integration of the elements, but also cosmology that establishes principles that comprise every cosmic manifestations, both on macro and micro level.
This article will examine several aspects of Empedocles' cosmology through the Love and Strife concept in order not only to give account of the specific characteristics of these two concepts, but also to make an attempt to reconcile the opposed predicates that are prefixed to his philosophy. In that sense, it will examine the possibility of connecting the two distinct philosophical projects, in one hand, of "On Nature" exposed in naturalistic discourse, and on the other, of "Purifications" which is woven with mystical elements. This article will also discuss the debate of the traditional double cosmogony (Panzerbieter, Zeller, Burnet, Bignone) and the theory of one cosmogony (Tanery, von Arnim, Bollack, Hö1scher, Solmsen). Also, will be examined the possibility of identification the cosmic and the daimonic cycle, namely that Love and Strife although are not assigned by themselves with ethically-valued predicate, they play significant role in the microcosmic human ethical relations
