Item type:Publication, Unemployment and a Stock – Flow Model on the Labour Market in the Republic of Macedonia(Economic Research Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 2017); ; ; The aim of this paper is to analyse the unemployment on the basis of administrative data sources and application of the stock-flow model. The intention is to recognize the changes and features of the unemployment regarding stocks and flows of the main segments on the labour market: employed, unemployed and inactive population in the Republic of Macedonia. Main reasons for the implementation of stock – flow model for determining the level of unemployment in Macedonia are following: a) Labour Force Survey (LFS) used by State Statistical Office (SSO) is based on the Census from 2002, therefore the sample used for calculating the level of unemployment is inadequate; and b) contrary to any economic logic, during the great global economic crisis and in the period after the crisis, the unemployment in Macedonia permanently decreased in conditions when the economy registered negative rates of economic growth and decline in industrial production over a longer period of time. The application of the stock – flow model, for the period 2008-2014 shows that the unemployment has not been reduced, i.e. the unemployment rate have stagnated or even increased. This is contrary to the trend of unemployment changes according to LFS of SSO. Thus, in 2014 the unemployment rate is higher than in the previous years by both alternatives in the calculations. According to our findings, the application of stock-flow model gives more realistic explanation of the changes and current situation on the Macedonian labour market, than the statistical data from the LFS of SSO in Macedonia. Our analysis shows that in a country with high and long-term unemployment, where the phenomenon of discouraged workers is expressed, and there has not been made a Census of the population for a longer period of time, accompanied by major demographic changes such as: an aging population and massive emigration from the country, the implementation of stock – flow model has significant analytical value in determining the unemployment and its analysis. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, How is COVID-19 reshaping temporary and circular labour migration: Serbia and North Macedonia perspectives(Forum geografic. Studii și cercetări de geografie și protecția mediului, 2021-06) ;Lukic, Vesna ;Predojevic Despic, Jelena; The COVID-19 pandemic has caused migrant workers worldwide to face numerous and specific challenges. This study aims to determine how the COVID-19 pandemic and its societal impact have influenced temporary and circular migrants from Serbia and North Macedonia. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 50 participants to gain a deeper understanding of their challenges and migration practices. Temporary circular labour migration from Serbia and North Macedonia are most intensive towards EU countries, which are geographically close and well-connected by traffic, and with which migrants have well-established migration ties. The results show that after the outbreak of the pandemic, respondents faced termination of employment contracts, reduced working hours and earnings. Most of the respondents returned and only a few found formal employment in the country of origin. Job-related impacts of COVID-19 on respondents are determined by temporary residence, a form of employment and the employment sector. Temporary and circular migrant workers from Serbia and North Macedonia involved in the essential sectors in EU countries are less likely to be severely affected by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results suggest that temporary and circular migration schemes should be improved after the pandemic, in a way that is sustainable even in times of sudden changes. In that regard, in addition to considering the needs of the labour markets of countries of origin and destination, the needs and the rights of migrants, should be prioritized in common solutions. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Impact of Digitalization on the Labour Market: The Case of North Macedonia(Institute of Economic Sciences, Belgrade, 2021-06); The impact of digitalization on the labour market is very complex and is manifested in different conditions for job creation and job protection, changed needs for occupations and skills, coping with skills mismatch and labour shortage etc. The aim of the research is to determine the possible implications of digitalization on the labour market in North Macedonia, by analyzing relevant labour market indicators and the results of employees’ survey based on identified hypotheses. The analysis of the labour market indicators shows that despite the positive changes, the situation on the Macedonian labour market remains unfavorable i.e. low employment rates, growing skills mismatch and labour shortages in conditions of still high unemployment. The survey results indicate that the digitalization may not cause serious job losses, but it can lead to significant shifts in the employment structure (regarding sectors, occupations, skills, nature of jobs, pressure on the lower skill levels etc.). The influence of digitalization on the labour demand will depend on the employment sector and job profile, as well as on the investments in technology and relevant experience to use it. Also, digitalization could reduce the labour shortages caused by demographic ageing. The survey results show that digitalization will impose changes in the education and professional expertise, management style and organizational culture, as well as in trade union organizations. The findings of this research are meaningful for policy makers, state institutions, employers, trade unions and other stakeholders. The digitalization implies need for coherent approach of all involved parties in North Macedonia. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Impact of Covid pandemic on the natural population increase in North Macedonia(Institute of Social Sciences-Belgrade, 2021-03-25); Objectives - The Covid-19 pandemic has brought significant consequences and implications, changing many social, economic, healthcare and environmental determinants, as well as demographic processes. Particularly emphasized is its impact on the changes in the total population increase. It is mainly determined by the natural population increase, and relatively less by migratory movements, due to limited international migrations in the new conditions worldwide. The aim of the research is to provide knowledge on the implications that the Covid-19 pandemic has had to date on the natural population increase in North Macedonia, by analyzing the relevant data and indicators published thus far. It offers knowledge about the essential features of the manifested changes, their key determinants and long-term impact in terms of intensified demographic ageing. Methodology - The methodological approach of the study involves application of desk research and analysis of the State Statistical Office data related to natural population increase, as well as marriages and divorces. Data and indicators for the natural increase and its components (live births and deaths) for the last 15 years are presented. A more detailed, per-month analysis of the changes in the natural increase, marriages and divorces is conducted for 2019 and 2020, using the available statistical data, which for 2020 implies using preliminary data. Implications – The analysis of the preliminary data on the natural population increase, as well as of marriages and divorces, indicates the significant changes in 2020, which were mostly caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Having in mind their long-term implications, further decrease in the natural population increase and total population growth can be expected, as well as acceleration of the process of demographic ageing. Once the pandemic is over, North Macedonia should focus on the revision of the current population policy and create comprehensive measures to mitigate the consequences of these unfavorable changes. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Challenges of the demographic ageing in the Republic of North Macedonia – current situation and prospects(Institute of Economics - Skopje, 2022-10); ; Djambaska, ElizabetaThe aim of this paper is to identify the changes in the period 2002-2021 and current situation related to population ageing and basic functional contingents of the resident population in North Macedonia. Based on the analysis the main challenges in terms of demographic and socio-economic development on mid and long term are determined and areas in which appropriate policies should be developed. The analyses show that resident population has declined for about 12% and the demographic ageing was accelerated. It results with decrease of the number of children for 27%, young population (32%), working-age population for (12.4%) and female fertile population (21.4%), while the population aged 65+ increased for 47.5%. In circumstances of extremely unfavorable demographic situation, the country is facing three major challenges referring to the necessity to mitigate the decrease of the resident population and of the young working-age population, as well as the rapid growth and aging of the elderly population. Each of them is equally complex and requires great attention and comprehensive activities of the policy makers in the country. Indisputable interrelation of the policies in all these areas requires creation and of a comprehensive strategy for family that should include all relevant aspects related to promoting its position and sustainability. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
