Item type:Publication, KINETICS OF SARS-CoV-2 NEUTRALIZING ANTIBODIES AFTER TWO DOSES OF BNT162b2, (BioNTech/Pfizer) VACCINE(Macedonian Association of Anatomists, 2021); ; ; ;Elena Petrushevska StanojevskaIrena KostovskaThe neutralizing antibody is an antibody that can block the binding and infection process of the virus cell receptor. MAGLUMI ® Neutralizing Antibody kit could detect all those antibodies that can block RBD-ACE2 combination. Studies evaluating the long-term duration of neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination are important to develop vaccination strategies. In this study, 131 healthcare workers (HCW) received the two-dose BNT162b2 regimen. Of the 131 HCW enrolled in the study, 85 (64.9%) were female and 46 (35.1%) were male, with a mean age (±SD) of 45.2 ± 10.31 (range 26-55) years. Of them, 91 were seronegative and 40 were seropositive at baseline. The samples were collected at different time points. Neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) were measured by CLIA method using Maglumi 800 analyzer. The median days that neutralizing antibodies were positive were 96 and 201 days for rapid and slow attenuation, respectively. No age and gender difference were found in Nabs levels. The decline in Nabs was pronounced (-96.8%) and approximately 47% of those tested were negative at day 180. Whether this decline correlates with a corresponding decline in clinical efficacy against the virus would need to be investigated in appropriate clinical trials. BNT162b2 elicits strong NAb production, especially 28 days after initial inoculation. Further investigations are urgently needed to improve both the comparability of data and our understanding of which levels should be considered predictive of immune protection - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, EFFECTS OF RAMADAN FASTING ON SOME BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS(Faculty of Medicine, University Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, 2021); ; ;Kostovska, Irena; Petrushevska-Stanojevska, ElenaIntroduction: Holy month Ramadan lasts for about 29-30 days. It is mandatory for all adult individuals of the Islamic faith to fast during the holy month of Ramadan. During this period, healthy Muslims do not eat or drink (i.e., total abstinence from food and fluids) and refrain from tobacco, daily from pre-dawn until dusk. Materials and Methods: The present study included healthy adult male and female Muslim volunteers from different towns in the Republic of North Macedonia. The number of subjects in the study was 195. Blood samples from all subjects were collected twice during the study - once 2-3 days prior to the beginning of Ramadan and then again, the last day of Ramadan fasting. The following biochemical parameters were taken into consideration: total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, glucose, insulin, total proteins, albumin, total and direct bilirubin, urea, creatinine and uric acid. Results: It was observed that compared to pre-fasting levels, total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) were significantly decreased (P=0.000) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level had significantly increased (P=0.000); total proteins were significantly increased (P=0.000); albumins were significantly increased (P=0.004); urea was significantly increased (P=0.004); total and direct bilirubin were significantly increased (P=0.000), glucose was significantly increased (P=0.000); there was no change in insulin levels (P<0.1) Conclusion: This study showed that Ramadan fasting has an effect on biochemical parameters. We can conclude that reduction in total cholesterol and triglycerides along with a rise in levels of HDL-C have beneficial effects on lipid profile post-Ramadan fasting period. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Serum amyloid A as a biomarker: diagnostic relevance and clinical association with acute ischemic stroke(MEDICAL FACULTY - SKOPJE, 2025-10-16) ;Ivanovska, Slavjana; ; ;Kerala, CoskunKostovska, IrenaSerum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase protein that circulates at low levels bound to high-density lipoproteins (HDL). During inflammation, its concentration rises sharply, altering HDL composition, lipid transport, and cholesterol metabolism. These changes contribute to vascular pathology, particularly atherosclerosis. Owing to its multifunctional role, SAA has gained attention as a potential biomarker in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, although its role in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains insufficiently clarified. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, SERUM ANTI-OXLDL ANTIBODIES IN PATIENTS WITH ANGRIOGRAPHICALLY CONFIRMED CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE(Macedonian Association of Anatomists and Morphologists, 2023-12); ;Kostovska, Irena; ; Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death worldwide. Oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) is believed to be central to the atherosclerotic cascade. Oxidative modification of LDL induces immunogenic epitopes in the LDL molecule, and the presence of antibodies against oxidized LDL (anti-oxLDL) has been demonstrated in human sera. Anti-oxLDL titer not only can predict a presence of atherosclerotic CAD but may also be a marker of plaque instability. The primary aim of this study was measurement of serum anti ox-LDL concentrations in CAD patients confirmed with coronary angiography. The secondary aim of the study was to evaluate if there is an association between anti-ox-LDL concentration and conventional risk factors for CAD. Ninety patients with coronary artery disease and 90 controls were included in the study. Patients were selected according to the positive result of coronary angiography. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-c and LDL-c were determined on Roche C311 Cobas Analyzer and OxLDLD and anti-oxLDL were determined with sandwich ELISA technique. We find significant difference between CAD patients and controls regarding OxLDL (p< 0.001). Serum anti OxLDL antibodies were correlated with LDL-c and we found significant correlation (p<0.05) in the CAD group. The regression model showed that the variables Age, BMI, DBP, SBP, Total cholesterol, HDL-c LDL-c and TG explained 30.39% of the variance from the variable anti-ox-LDL. Our results show that serum levels of ox LDL are associated with presence of CAD and with the lipid parameters. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, LIPOPROTEIN-ASSOCIATED PHOSPHOLIPASE A2 (Lp‐PLA2) AS A PREDICTOR OF END-STAGE RENAL DISEASE IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETIC NEPHROPATHY(Faculty of Medicine, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, 2024-12-11) ;Kostovska, Irena; ; ; Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a specific biomarker for vascular inflammation. It is associated with microvascular complications such as diabetic nephropathy (DN) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. To determine the predictive value of Lp-PLA2 concentration/activity for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with DN. A total of 94 patients included in this cross-sectional study with DN were divided into four stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) according to CKD-EPI: Stage II (n=20), Stage IIIa (n=29), Stage IIIb (n=38), and Stage IV (n=7). Forty-four healthy subjects were used as a control group. In addition to anamnestic data (age, gender, body weight, height, glycemic control), we measured the concentration of glucose, total cholesterol, triacylglycerols, blood urea, and creatinine in the blood serum using standard photometric methods. Lp-PLA2 concentration/activity was measured by chemiluminescence immunoassay-CLIA. Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) serum creatinine was used to determine the GFR and CKD stages. We found significant differences among subgroups of patients with DN divided according to CKD stage and healthy subjects regarding age, body mass index, duration of disease, blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, triacylglycerols, blood urea, serum creatinine, GFR, and Lp-PLA2. A significant negative correlation was found between Lp‐PLA2 and GFR. ROC analysis showed that Lp-PLA2 had a positive predictive value of 98.3% in patients with DN. Lp-PLA2 gradually increased in stages of DN. Lp-PLA2 could be considered as a potential predictive biomarker for the progression of DN to ESRD. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
