Introduction/Objective In the first year of COVID-19 pandemic, global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by a massive 25%, according to the World Health Organization. Objective of the study was to determine the level of depression and insomnia among students in North Macedonia during COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Cross-sectional study was performed among students at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje during May-July of 2021. The anonymous online survey contained questions for sex, age, their opinion, and attitude to COVID-19 infection, if they had any infection/isolation and about physical activity during the pandemic. We used scales for assessment of insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index - ISI) and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire 9 - PHQ-9). Results The study was completed by 355 participants, 28.4% of them had clinically important insomnia scores and almost 47.5% of the participants presented clinically important depression scores. Female and younger participants had higher scores for both scales. A highly statistically significant, positive correlation was detected between ISI and PHQ-9 scores (? = 0.646, p = 4.05?10-43), suggesting that during the examined cross-sectional period of COVID-19 pandemics, depression and insomnia were mutually connected. Conclusions COVID-19 pandemic caused a serious impact on mental health of the population, especially on young people, girls, students, and those who live alone. Therefore, we should be prepared for support and treatment of these vulnerable groups, not only as health care services, but also as educational institutions to give support to students in terms of consultation and motivation.

    Environmental noise and sleep disturbance: research in Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and Newly Independent States
    (Medknow, 2013)
    ;
    Lekaviciute, Jurgita
    Countries from South-East Europe (SEE), Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Newly Independent States (NIS) are in the process of harmonization with European environmental noise legislation. However, research work on noise and health was performed in some countries independently of harmonization process of adoption and implementation of legislation for environmental noise. Aim of this review is to summarize available evidence for noise induced sleep disturbance in population of CEE, SEE and NIS countries and to give directions for further research work in this field. After a systematic search through accessible electronic databases, conference proceedings, PhD thesis, national reports and scientific journals in English and non-English language, we decided to include six papers and one PhD thesis in this review: One paper from former Yugoslavia, one paper from Slovakia, one paper from Lithuania, two papers from Serbia and one paper, as also one PhD thesis from The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Noise exposure assessment focused on road traffic noise was mainly performed with objective noise measurements, but also with noise mapping in case of Lithuanian study. Sleep disturbance was assessed with the questionnaire based surveys and was assumed from dose-effect relationship between night-time noise indicator (Lnight ) for road traffic noise and sleep disturbance (for Lithuanian study). Although research evidence on noise and sleep disturbance show to be sufficient for establishing dose response curves for sleep disturbance in countries where studies were performed, further research is needed with particular attention to vulnerable groups, other noise sources, development of laboratory research work and common methodology in assessment of burden of diseases from environmental noise.

    The systems of public complaints on environmental noise were reviewed in seven countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), South-East Europe (SEE), and Newly Independent States (NIS). Public complaints remain an important issue due to differences in public sensitivity to noise and due to several cases where a measurement of noise intensity does not give a satisfying solution to the problem. The unresolved problem remaining in the residential neighborhoods is the noise from pubs and restaurants that are open until late in the night. In our review, we compiled information on the institutions responsible for the implementation of environmental noise legislation and organizations that are responsible for dealing with public complaints. Information on activities for increasing public awareness on hazards rising from environmental noise and the role of civil initiative was explored. In seven countries, and among them, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, and Poland, the responsibilities and duties are shared among different institutions at national and regional levels, depending on the noise source. The problem of gathering information on complaints and using it for improving the wellbeing and health of citizens remains often difficult and unsolved.

    Background: Agriculture is one of the most dangerous industries, both for the employees in that sector and for their families and the environment. The use of personal protective preventive measures and the maintenance of good hygienic practices are the basis for healthy production and healthy workers. The safety and hygiene of food products should be present during all stages of production. Objectives: The study aimed to assess the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by apple growers during agricultural procedures as well as the hygiene habits of agricultural workers. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted including 101 farmers from the Prespa region in the Republic of North Macedonia by using a questionnaire with 34 questions. The questions were formulated in order to give us an insight into the protective preventive measures undertaken at work by apple producers and their hygiene. Results: The study included 101 apple growers from the Prespa region. Wearing a completely tidy special PPE when using pesticides was registered in 78.2% of farmers, and when lawn mowing in 42.5%. 16% of the surveyed farmers during agricultural activities did not always wash their hands after going to the toilet, and almost 30% of them did not use soap when washing their hands. Conclusion: There is inadequate hygiene practice/personal hygiene during agricultural activities. In addition, the proper use of PPE is not at a satisfactory level and poses a risk to the health of apple growers.

    Aim. To evaluate sleep disturbance caused by environmental noise in residents of Skopje urban centre and to quantify the probability for sleep disturbance related to night-time noise exposure. Methods. Cross sectional study with noise measurements for determination of noise exposure indicator Lnight. A randomised sample was selected from adult population and directly interviewed with questionnaire for assessment of sleep disturbance. Results. 510 questionnaires were collected and the response rate was 72%, 8% of the population sample reported a high level of sleep disturbance and 18% reported a moderate level of sleep disturbance. The most frequent sources of noise were neighbourhood and road traffic. The most disturbed age group were individuals 51-65 years old, who were significantly more disturbed (p=0.010) than the age group of 41-50 years old. Differences in sleep disturbance were significant only for the group exposed to Lnight ≥ 56 dBA (Wald = 4.31; p = 0.04). Exposure to Lnight above 56 dBA had OR = 2.2 (95% CI 1.1 - 4.7) or double significant increase probability for sleep disturbance, compared with control group of subjects exposed to Lnight ≤ 45 dBA. Conclusion. Night time noise exposure above the established limit values significantly increased the risk for sleep disturbance. These findings induce necessity for reducing noise exposure, especially during night-time and for taking preventive measures.

    The EU Health Strategy „Together for Health“ acknowledged climate change as a health threat and stressed the role of the European Community to coordinate and respond rapidly to health threats globally and strengthen the capacities of countries (European Commission, 2008). The aim of the study was to determine the level of awareness of the population about the problem with the global climate change and the measures undertaken by the responsible bodies to handle the climate change. Material and methods: A pilot survey was conducted in December 2018 in the Republic of Macedonia by applying a questionnaire, which was an adapted version of the survey questionnaire (‚climate change‘ version 1), translated in Macedonian language and distributed on an interactive online platform. A total of 130 respondents answered the questionnaire. Results: The largest percentage (90.2%) of the respondents said air pollution was first thing they associated with the climate change, followed by the traffic density (41.7%) and waste management (41.7%). When it comes to responsibility, the National Government (33.8%) has the highest responsibility in comparison with international organizations (20%). Conclusion: The study has shown that there is certain level of awareness among the population concerning climate change and associated phenomena such as traffic density, fires and floods, but also strong campaigns has to be undertaken in order to raise public awareness.

    Phosphates are used as food additives by meat processing industries to improve the technological properties of the products. However, phosphates can have adverse effects on human health so their use is regulated by law setting the maximum allowable level of phosphates in a meat product. This study evaluates the total phosphorus contents in meat and meat products placed on the Macedonian market in the previous five years. The results showed that a significant number of analysed meat products contained more than 5000 mg/kg total phosphorus as P2O5. However, it must be stressed that for the time being there is no analytical methodology available capable of distinguishing the naturally present phosphates from the added ones.
