Item type:Publication, Consumption, motivation and experience in dark tourism: a conceptual and critical analysis(Informa UK Limited, 2020-02-05)A review of recent relevant literature related to dark tourism indicates that there is a growing academic interest in ‘dark tourism consumption’, ‘dark tourism motivation’ and ‘dark tourism experience’. Therefore, the objectives of the present research are threefold: to examine the progress of research on these three concepts; to give a critical analysis of recent research; and to identify research gaps and questions that require fuller examination. In order to adopt new research orientations, the use of a broader post-disciplinary research framework is in need. The findings reveal that the three concepts are evolving and advancing, and new researches push the boundaries of exploration into new directions. From the analysis of recent literature, it can be concluded that thanatopsis is a rare characteristic of tourist visits. This is in contrast to the early conceptual studies, which claim that death is the primary motive for visiting dark sites. The findings reveal that many visitors are motivated by the desire and an interest in cultural heritage, learning, education, understanding about what happened at the dark site etc. It is important to emphasise that these motivations are affected by internal conflicts that the experience generates. Tourist experience is more in line with that of а mainstream heritage sites. In general, if tourists do not experience a site as dark, then they cannot be called dark tourists. Hence, the present research appeals to a clearer distinction of the ‘dark tourists’ based on experience. Except for the ‘mortality mediation model’, ‘dystopian dark tourism’ and ‘Terror Management Theory’, there are limit efforts to understand tourists at dark sites. Therefore, scientists must propose new approaches and additional empirical researches to prove that interest in death is a key motive for visiting dark sites. Lastly, from the literature review, new directions for further research have emerged. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The evolution of religious tourism: Concept, segmentation and development of new identities(Elsevier, 2020-12)The current paper aims to analyse the evolution of religious tourism and how the existing concepts, paradigms, and practices related to religious tourism have evolved and changed over time. The principal research methods used in this paper are: historical analysis, comparison, scoping, synthesising, and identifying research gaps. The paper reveals that the concept of religious tourism is gradually transforming and upgrading over the years, as well as it is going through a phase of segmentation, creation of new market niches, and developing new identities. The intensive growth of religious tourism in the global market, its complex structure, and its dynamic qualitative and quantitative changes require a postmodern and multidisciplinary approach and in-depth analysis of this type of tourism, whose previous development has been characterised by partial overlapping between elements of alternative and mass tourism. The current paper reinforces the theory of religious tourism. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Regional inequalities and contemporary problems in regional tourism development: a case of Macedonia(Taylor & Francis, 2018-01-09)As a subject of this research, we take the analysis of problems in tourism development in the country at the regional NUTS 3 level. Problems in development arise due to large disparities that exist between regions, especially in the reallocation of resources, realized tourist trade, the regional distribution of accommodation facilities and the number of employees in the tourism industry. Research conducted on the example of Macedonia shows visible differences in the current stage of the development of tourism between active areas of tourism and underdeveloped areas. Uneven development of tourism in the country entails the need for planning the development of tourism and the policy of development to reduce regional disparities. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Evolution and changes of tourism in Macedonia in the post-socialist period (1991–2018)(Uniwersytet Gdanski, 2019-09-30)The study provides a historical and contextual analysis of the evolution of tourism in Macedonia. The time scope is defined as the period between 1991 and in 2018. The study investigates the tourism development in Macedonia in the post-socialist period of the country, using the Butler (1980) Tourist Area Life Cycle (TALC) model as an analytical tool. The model provides a framework to explain the complex processes of the development and changes in tourism in the country over the years. For this purpose, an analysis of secondary data sources is implemented to find the changes in the evolutionary stages of tourism development. The findings show that tourism in Macedonia is in a stage of development, and that it has not yet reached the consolidation stage. Lastly, the study offers a better understanding of how tourism in Macedonia is changing in the complex post-socialist period. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, GEOPOLITICS OF THE ENDLESS TRANSITION OF THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA(Faculty of Economics, University of Banja Luka, 2016-10) ;Kitevski, Goran; With the independence after the breakup of Yugoslavia, Macedonia initiated the process of changing of the socio-political system. Such a transition is still active today, meaning that in the meantime the Republic of Macedonia faced a number of serious problems in the implementation of reforms in the system. The arduous process is presented in several developmental stages that have a different impact on the social situation in the country, from the argued aspects of the early ’90s privatization the present increased stages of emigration. For ineffective transition process, several factors and conditions can be underlined, which usually have broad geopolitical basis. Geopolitical features such as the geopolitical position of the country; country’s internal and foreign policy; European integration; neighborly relations and regional arrangements, along with the terms of globalization must be considered as major factors in the endless transition of Macedonian society. Some of them will be presented as positive, but some factors are taken into negative circumstances that represent the transition as an impossible project. Geopolitics of the transitional aspects will explain the current level of transformation of the Macedonian society, the development phase of the free market, the economic effects from the membership of the country in free trade associations and projections of the level of social, economic and political transformation in the next decade in context of geopolitical features and processes. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, ALTERNATIVE FORMS OF TOURISM AS A STRATEGIC SOLUTION FOR THE PROBLEM-SHORT TOURISM SEASON IN THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA(MACEDONIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY, 2015-09); ; Kitevski, GoranThe main feature of the tourist movements in the country of Republic of Macedonia is the seasonal concentration which occurs as a result primarily of the needs of tourists for leisure and recreation in coastal areas of the natural lakes in the summer and mountain centers during the winter months. Thus, Republic of Macedonia is an interesting destination for tourists during the summer months of July and August and in a very small part of the winter tourist season, while in spatial aspect, most attractive places are Ohrid and Skopje. This distribution of temporal and spatial concentration of tourist movements causes a range of substantive issues like the short tourist season, unprofitably performance of the tourism sector and so on. The way out of this situation should be sought in the discovery and activation of new tourism places outside the main summer and winter fraction of the tourist season, or through the process of planning, organizing and developing alternative forms of tourism (congress, cultural tourism, rural tourism, spa tourism, hunting tourism etc.) for which, the Republic of Macedonia has a quality potential, but so far has not been sufficiently exploited. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Urban Regeneration and Changes Driven by Tourism and the ‘Skopje 2014’ Project(Accent Publisher, 2021-02-25)The current paper explores the relationship between urban regeneration, tourism and culture, and offers a common approach that each of these three concepts can bring. The paper proposes and develops a new and integrated conceptual analytical framework. The analysis uses the example of the capital Skopje, which provides a suitable framework for interpreting the process. The study uses combined research methods and analysis to obtain a critical synthesis. Skopje has catalyzed a new example of urban regeneration driven by tourism and the ‘Skopje 2014’ project. The results show that, except for the old city’s core, which was generally refurbished with the ‘Skopje 2014’ project, new tourist values were also promoted in other peripheral municipalities of the city. The number, spatial concentration and nationality of foreign tourists have changed in the analyzed period. As well, the findings indicate changes in the geography and business of hotels/accommodation establishments and their increasing use in recent years. This study fits into the theoretical debate on the determinants of tourism/culture-led urban regeneration and provides appropriate theoretical contributions to literature, as well as a set of recommendations that can be useful for public sector authorities and policymakers. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, ТHE SOCIO - POLITICAL CONDITIONS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA(Faculty of Economics, University of Banja Luka, 2014-04); ; Kitevski, GoranThe transformation of the Republic of Macedonia to an open market society, through the years of independence is accompanied by a series events and occurrences that are characterized as social and political problems and processes. Overall, the frequency and intensity of events of general social nature is such that Macedonia has acquired the image of a country that is categorized into social and political incoherent countries. It is not in the favor of the strong will of the Republic of Macedonia and the striving for greater economic liberalization, establishment of macro and micro economic conditions that create favorable business climate, and more. From one perspective, it is the social and political situations that create Macedonian openness on economic participation and entrepreneurship, and on the other hand, such problems and processes are blocking the creation of the “economic oasis“ in the region. Concrete terms and occurrences that are classified as social and political developments and difficulties will be explained in the paper, as well as the tendency of the state to establishment the entrepreneurship of highest order.
