Item type:Publication, Prevalence of low bone mass and vitamin D deficiency in pediatric and adult patients with cystic fibrosis in Republic of Macedonia(2014); ;Mecevska-Jovcevska, Jasmina; ; Bone disease in cystic fibrosis (CF) has become a topic of widespread interest and impact in the CF community. Recently, some biochemical markers have been proposed to provide information about the dynamics of bone turnover. Only limited information is available for young patients. Imbalance between bone formation and degradation in CF especially in puberty has become an important issue for developing osteopenia. Influence of vitamin D receptor alleles on BMD suggests that these polymorphisms have a greater influence on BMD in childhood. The aim of our study was to assess prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and osteopenia in pediatric and adult CF patients. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Comparison of Oxidative Stress Levels in Healthy Children and Children with Allergic Rhinitis(Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2023-03-01); ; ; ; Background/aim: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Under the influence of exogenous factors - allergens, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are released during cellular metabolism. They induce a series of pathological changes in the mucosa. Oxidative stress is а result of an imbalance between the production of ROS and the ability to neutralize them. The aim of this study is to compare the levels of oxidative stress between healthy children and children with allergic rhinitis. Material and methods: A total number of 60 children were included (30 healthy children and 30 children with AR). The oxidative stress index was determined by using the FRAS 5 (Free Radical Analytical System) Bravo system. Demographic characteristics, medical history, children's living conditions and eating habits were obtained from the questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements and the absolute number of eosinophils in the peripheral smear were performed on each child. Results: This study showed high oxidative stress index and a significantly higher value of the absolute number of eosinophils in the peripheral smear in children with AR in comparison to healthy children (p<0.05). The group of children with AR had more atopic characteristics and was more exposed to passive smoking than healthy children. Conclusion: Compared to healthy children, children with AR have a high index of oxidative stress, despite of the very high mean value of the concentration of water-soluble antioxidants in serum (PAT test) in the group of children with AR. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Assessement of bone health in adults with cystic fibrosis in the Republic of North Macedonia(Македонско лекарско друштво = Macedonian medical association/De Gruyter, 2022-11); ; The term Cystic Fibrosis Bone Disease (CFBD) is used to describe low BMD and /or fragility fractures in CF patients. Objective: We decided to carry out a bone health screening of adult patients with CF in the Republic of North Macedonia and establish their current status. Material and Methods: We conducted a prospective study which comprised a sample of 30 individuals with CF above the age of 18, of the population of ~50 adults with CF in North Macedonia. The sex, age, height and weight (later converted to BMI kg/m2) were recorded, blood sample analysed for serum levels of calcium, free calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 25(OH)D. We conducted an interview with all subjects regarding additional risk factors. All subjects underwent DXA scan, by measuring the BMD at the lumbar spine and proximal hip. Results: approximately half of the adults with CF have low BMD and about a quarter of them also have osteoporosis. 33,3% of the patients had history of fragility fractures, the mean BMI was lower than the recommended values, vitamin D deficiency was found in 60% and continuous use of glucocorticoids was recorded in 30% of the subjects. Conclusion: Our findings align with those of other studies. The most effective method for evaluating BMD in adult CF patients is DXA scanning and monitoring regularly. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
