Item type:Publication, INFLUENCE OF THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE ON CFRP STRENGTHENED RC BEAM(Drustvo gradjevinskih konstruktera Srbije, 2016-09); ; A large number of existing RC structures, whether they have been built of concrete with usual compressive strength or of concrete with high compressive properties, exhibit non adequate performance in terms of diminished bearing capacity and there is a need of post strengthening during their service life. This paper presents numerical analysis of the influence of the compressive strength of the concrete on the performance of the CFRP strengthened RC beam. Analysis is performed for two characteristic cases: when the bond between concrete and external reinforcement is continuous along the length of the beam and when the bond is improper executed creating discontinuity zone between RC and CFRP plate. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Historic City protection vs Resilient City transformation(2022-07); Andonova, ElenaThe city of Skopje is a result of dialectical contradictions of diachronically different concepts of development and superimposed planning concepts of unfinished layers. The Old Bazaar represents one of the oldest urban fragments and shows a strong resilience and capacity to overcome numerous disastrous events. Unfortunately, due to the development constraints set by the preservation measures, and speculative building actions in the context, it is gradually but progressively losing its cultural identity and role as a creative socio-economic hub. Weak development policies and non-adaptive preservation regulations to changing environment and socio-economic development are urging actions to adopt new regeneration measures and appropriate approaches that could bring life into the valuable cultural heritage setting. Existing patterns emerging from the unique uses and spatiality of the Old Bazaar, as an exclusive area of commercial use and traditional urban fabric of cultural heritage, have to be preserved, but simultaneously it is important to introduce novel tools for applied creative industries and adaptive re-use of the building heritage. All efforts of appropriation of the cultural heritage area of the Old Bazaar according to the new sustainable and equitable economic opportunities, should be carefully tested and implemented in the context, in order to avoid any socio-environmental decay. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Challenging Neglect and Indifference: The Case of Skopje(TU Delft / Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, 2020) ;Ivanovska Deskova, Ana ;Deskov, VladimirIn 1963, Skopje suffered catastrophic earthquake that destroyed 75-80% of its built fund. The aftermath of the earthquake propelled unprecedented international solidarity. The process led by UN was high in ambition – to promote Skopje as an exemplary global city. The previously unknown, peripheral city became field of global cooperation and laboratory for testing latest urban and architectural paradigms. The process that in its highest intensity lasted less than 20 years, resulted with the most powerful segment of Skopje’s recent architectural history. After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Skopje entered long and highly uncertain process of “transition”. Along with other challenges, linked to political, economic, social and cultural changes, this process launched dramatic and controversial spatial transformations. Already aged, to certain extent obsolete, systematically neglected, threatened with brutal alteration of their authentic appearance, many exemplary buildings of Skopje post-earthquake renewal could be considered “heritage in danger”. This paper intends to demonstrate how something that usually firmly belongs in the realm of professional preservation could become an act of individual “architectural activism”. By presenting several initiatives, we would like to show how one can act when the social and aesthetic values of the heritage are under attack. With a strong belief that the buildings are significant enough to be considered a heritage, we conducted “experimental preservation” - an extensive process of collecting archival material, research as a base for future valorisation, series of public presentations, exhibitions and publications intended to initiate discussion within the profession itself as well to raise the public awareness about the values of Skopje’s 20th Century Heritage. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, RESTORATION OF THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL "JOHANN HEINRICH PESTALOZZI"-SKOPJE(2020); The post-earthquake rebuilding of Skopje provided valuable examples of modernist architecture that deserve to be included in the category of a protected building heritage. A prominent instance is the elementary school named after the famous Swiss educator and pedagogue "Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi", the first example in this area that introduces the practical application of deeply thought out methods of integral education promoted by him in the early 19th century. Many contemporary architects have incorporated the efficient use of this educational concept, including the renowned Swiss architect Alfred Roth, creating a unique sample of a school that includes specific geographic and regional features (climatic, seismic, cultural - aesthetic). In terms of properties, the building contains originality, rarity and aesthetic-artistic value. With reference to other criteria, it also includes the value of authentic preservation, which is in crisis without adoption of adequate and prompt protection and restoration measures. In respect of protecting the school from further destruction, the Swiss Embassy in Skopje made an official request for a study and design documents for the school reconstruction by detecting all critical issues, developed and executed by the expert team from the Faculty of Architecture in Skopje. This paper, which is based on the results of the research, conducted by us as a part of the group, aims to elaborate the methodological approach of the analyses contained in the study, which, as a pre-design procedure, provided a solid base for developing design documents. A significant component of the study that needs to be emphasized was the use of computer technology throughout the work process, using parametric insertion of structural and other elements of the building's architecture into a 3D model. This approach allowed the generation of architectural details across any part of the facility in an exact form, which proved extremely useful through the process of constructing the design documents. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Identifying Abandoned Industrial Zones in Skopje and Evaluating the Potential of Extending Their Useful Lifespan by Adaptive Reuse(Springer Nature Switzerland, 2023-12-07); ; ; Dimevska, LiljanaThe built environment of cities can play a key role in the transition to a circular economy, especially considering the large resource consumption and waste generation of building construction. This paper explores the potential for adaptive reuse of abandoned industrial buildings through the lens of the sustainability within the context of circular economy in Skopje, North Macedonia. The adaptive reuse of vacant industrial buildings can bring environmental, social, and economic benefits by employing an urban strategy based on circular economy principles and innovative approaches. Considering the transformation of Skopje’s industrial zones through the city’s development, this paper identifies potential abandoned industrial sites in the city where the adaptive reuse of buildings, could improve environmental, social, and economic quality of the built environment. The identified abandoned industrial sites were analyzed in terms of their functional transformation and their vulnerability to current demolishing practices.</jats:p> - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, POST EARTHQUAKE FIRE RESISTANCE OF RC FRAME(2017-01); ;Pejovic, Radenko; ; Stevanovic, BoskoFire following an earthquake is an important factor causing damage to buildings and life-line structures. Therefore, besides satisfying structural design requirements for normal loads, such as dead and live loads, including the seismic hazard, buildings should also be designed to withstand the fire following earthquake for a certain minimum duration as required for a desired level of performance. Calculating structural response to fire after earthquake is a few step process: modeling the structure including nonlinear analysis options; choice for earthquake analysis scenario; seismic nonlinear analysis: pushover or dynamic time history; fire hazards analysis to identify all possible fire scenarios; thermal analysis to calculate temperature history in each member; structural analysis to determine forces, stresses and deformations to estimate whether local or global collapse would occur during any of the fire hazard scenarios. To evaluate the seismic damage in a structure, first, the seismic hazard level is determined from the seismic hazard spectrum for the given site, followed by the selection of appropriate ground motion records and structural analysis. The seismic excitation induces damage and lateral deformation provoking additional stresses in the frame due to the moment caused by the P-D effect. Structural members and joints are also weakened by the cyclic inelastic deformation, causing stiffness and strength degradation. Once the earthquake-induced damage in the structure is determined, the damaged structure is subjected to a post earthquake fire (PEF) scenario, which involves fire hazard analysis to determine the time history of fire growth and spread and stress and collapse analysis of the structure but also to analyze no-collapse conditions and cooling after fire. The behavior of a particular reinforced concrete structure that was fire exposed after seismic action is presented in this paper. The seismic response of the structure is evaluated using a pushover analysis, while the displacement demand under the corresponding seismic event is determined using the recommendations implemented in Eurocode 8. The earthquake-induced damage in the structure is determined and, as next step, the structure is exposed to Standard fire ISO 834. For that purpose the program FIRE, based on FEM, is used. The program FIRE carries out the nonlinear transient heat flow analysis and nonlinear stress-strain response associated with fire. The solution technique used in FIRE is a finite element method coupled with time step integration. The computer modulus FIRE-T solves the governing differential equation of heat transfer in conduction. The response of a reinforced concrete elements and plane frame structures exposed to fire is predicted by modulus FIRE-S. This modulus accounts for: dimensional changes caused by temperature differences, changes in mechanical properties of materials with changes in temperature, degradation of sections by cracking and/or crushing and acceleration of shrinkage and creep with an increase of temperature. Pushover analysis, representing dynamic effects of an earthquake via static nonlinear procedure, is incorporated in the program as an option that precedes the postearthquake fire analysis. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

The specific objective of this study is to enhance and test different pedagogical models for learning on the sustainable rehabilitation of mass housing neighbourhoods (MHN), as a specific type of modern heritage, through innovative extracurricular teaching practices based on interdisciplinarity, flexibility, and adaptability. This research presents three student workshops focusing on the rehabilitation of mass housing neighbourhoods (MHN), involving students, academics, and professionals from the field, organised in Germany, Serbia, and North Macedonia in 2022. Moreover, it engages a comparative analysis of the learning formats and approaches developed within this discipline-specific cross-border collaboration. The study provides (1) an insight into the comparative analysis of learning capabilities and (2) the formulation of workshop models supported by diagramming of the workshop structure. The conclusion of the article summarises the findings and highlights the essential aspects for engaging student workshops, as an instrument for generating operational knowledge in the field of mass housing rehabilitation. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
