SOME IDEAS TO INTRODUCE RISK AS A DESIGN CRITERIA IN ROCK SLOPE ENGINEERING
(Savez građevinskih inženjera Srbije, Beograd, 2025-10)

Well known fact is that the process of investigations, design, construction and maintenance of rock slopes is extremely challenging task. The whole life cycle of such structures is affected by many uncertainties related to geological media, non-predictable aspects related to force majeure, possible life losses, selection of apropriate design procedure etc. When talking about design process, in the present geotechnical practice, risk is mainly evaluated indirectly through reliability-based design approaches. There, some criteria are defined in order to estimate the upper limit of the probability of failure of respective engineering structures. On the other side, in this article, the concept is extended, and risk as a design criteria for rock slopes is developed in more details, based on authors’ experiences from some large infrastructural projects. A range of values for Reliability Index (β) and Probability of failure (PF) are proposed in relation to Geotechnical Categories (GC), Consequence Class (CC) and Geotechnical Complexity Class (GCC) as they are suggested in the second generation of Eurocode 7. The proposed methodology is illustrated here with regard to rock slope with impressive dimensions, and it can be a subject for further developements

Rockfalls, landslides and floods continue to have a growing share in the overall damages and losses, influencing considerably the national budget. Recent experiences and practices related to application of stabilisation measures and remediation of rockfall zones along MKD national road network are presented in the article. Analyses are based on case histories where the prognosis of geotechnical conditions is a key element in definition of remedial measures for rock slopes. Some issues related with Consequence Class, as suggested in Eurocode 7 202x, and the concepts of Acceptable Level of Risk are presented. Proposals in definition of Acceptable Level of Risk, through combining Probability of Failure, Reliability Index and Consequence Classes, are given in the article. These findings can help in development and/or improvement of rockfall, landslide and flood risk management strategies.

Complex laboratory tests for determination of strength-deformability parameters in unsaturated conditions for sand from tailing dam

One significant portion of the Earth’s surface is subjected to dry and semi-dry climatic conditions, and consequently, many of the soils in engineering practice are unsaturated. A specific type of structures where the change in the degree of saturation is a result of both climatic changes, as well as draining conditions are tailing dams. Tailing dams are objects of capital importance where the downstream slope is made of fine sand in wet condition. The draining reduces the saturation degree, which favorably influences the behavior of the dam. However, this aspect is not considered during their design, so there always remains the dilemma of "reserves" of shearing strength. Hence, the interest arises to study the properties of tailing sand in different conditions of saturation and to implement them in the numerical analysis for the calculation of stresses, strains and stability. Such dedicated tests are carried out at several high-educational institutions, and thereafter applied in the stability analyses. The obtained lab-numeric results contribute to the clarification of the role and influence of partial saturation on the shear strength, slope stability and deformability of tailing sand.

Even in the 21st century, the battle for better place of geotechnics in the range of technical sciences is still in progress. Most often, it is in the shadow of civil engineering, indeed - not that deep as it was decades ago. Anyway, it is often said that there is need of larger communication either between civil and geotechnical engineers or between gotechnical engineers and the society, which often can not recognize the values and importance of geotechnical engineering. So, it could be imagined how far is geotechnics, as a discipline, from architecture and what amount of work and energie is needed to establish good cooperation between them in order to avoid absurdly competition. The proposed paper aims to present two opposite cases from R. Macedonia: one positive, showing synergie between geotechnics and architecture on the example of retaining wall in the St. Jovan Bigorski monastery complex, and the other one not that bright, presenting the negative impact of geotechnics on architecture through the example of excavation pit protection in Skopje. The experience of the designers is going to be presented below.
