    THINKING ABOUT SECURITY IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD

    Contemporary security risks and threats initiate a new thinking about security and a new thinking about the content of the security agenda. The world is confronting both, by traditional (military) and contemporary (nonmilitary) threats today, which must be prevented and defeated collectively, by applying a mutual set of traditional and new approaches and methods. Such a situation directly raises the dilemma about the essential thinking of security in today's modern world. Therefore, the paper analysis about these security aspects is divided into two main directions. Regarding the first one, the focus is on the evolutionary nature of the security and its changing perceptions and theoretic understandings in different contexts, while in the second one, the focus is on the contemporary understanding of security in today's modern world, especially through the prism of increasingly promoted concepts of the environmental security, food security, and energy security.

    THE EU STRATEGIC APPROACH TO SECURITY

    Over the past three decades, the EU has undertaken a wide range of activities aimed at its proliferation as a serious and respected security actor. Namely, in 1993 the Union adopted the Common Foreign and Security Policy, then, in 1998, it laid the foundations of the European Security and Defense Policy, while in 2003 it adopted the first security strategy, by which practically began the development process of its strategic approach to security. Starting from the significance that strategic aspects have in security approaches designing (at national, regional and international levels), the paper attention is directed to the analysis of the strategic approach of the European Union in this regard. To this end, the focus is specifically placed on the research of the three strategic documents to date (2003, 2016 and 2022), with which the Union designs its own strategic approach and response to the dynamic and challenging security environment. Hence, the intention is aimed at providing a clear perception and a more detailed understand of the evolutionary character of the EU’s strategic approach to security, with particular reference to the main challenges and perspectives in this context.

    The Societal Security Understanding Through the Contemporary Risks and Threats

    The expansion and deepening of the security concept, has initiated emergence and increase of the importance of new types of security, new security actors, new reference security objects, etc., in the past 30 years. As a result, there is a consensus among the research and academic community today, about the fact that security is a variable category whose understanding and interpretation is dependent on a number of different aspects and point of views. Within the framework of the new expanded and deepened understanding of security, the concept of the so-called societal security occupies a significant place. The focus of the paper is specifically directed to the analysis of the characteristics and essence of societal security, as well as to the analysis of contemporary risks and threats to this type of security. In this regard, the purpose of the paper analysis is aimed in detection of the (structural) risks and threats to societal security and in investigating whether and how they can become a national security issue, especially in multi-ethnic or on various other grounds divided societies.
