Healthy Aging: A Key Strategy for Retaining Skilled Nursing Professionals

<jats:p>Background: Early retirements and decreasing job retention rates have resulted in a growing shortage of nursing staff in the healthcare systems of many countries. Recently, the World Health Organization and the European Commission have joined forces to attract and retain nurses in their systems in a period of increasing demand for healthcare services, due to population aging. While recruiting and training new nurses is a necessary long-term solution, it is equally important for policymakers to focus on retaining the current workforce, as to ensure continuity of care. Aim: This paper aims to review current literature and to discuss the key aspects of this critical issue, focusing on the concept of healthy aging and its significance as a key strategy for retaining nursing staff. Design: This discursive paper explores published literature highlighting the interaction between aging and the challenges that nursing staff faces in daily practice. It also examines global trends in retirement patterns and proposes strategies to retain the aging workforce, with a particular focus on succession planning and knowledge transfer. Results-Conclusion: Both general and more targeted approaches that have been proposed are necessary to enhance nursing staff retention. These approaches include the concept of promoting healthy aging, which can play a key role in this regard. Implications: This paper addresses the nursing staff shortage, highlighting strategies that have been proposed as to prioritize staff retention for healthcare providers and personnel managers.</jats:p>

Determination of the Risk Factors Associated with Problematic Social Media Use Among Adolescents of Albanian and Macedonian Descent in North Macedonia

<jats:p>Problematic social media use turns out to have effects on many dimensions of teenagers' lives, including emotional well-being, social interactions, and interpersonal relationships. The focus of research is oriented directed towards identification, in addition to its effects, the predictive factors associated with problematic use of social media. The purpose of this study is to predict the effect of family support, school support and school well-being on the problematic social media use among adolescents in North Macedonia. The study included 5144 adolescents 11, 13 and 15 years old, of which 48.4% are boys and 51.6% are girls. Considering the structure of the population in the country, 66.6% are young Macedonians and 33.4% Albanians. The data presented are part of the cross-sectional study "Health and Behaviour of School-aged Children", collected during 2022. The results of the research showed that family support is a predictor of problematic social media use for Macedonian and Albanian girls and boys, whereas teacher support did not emerge as a determinant of problematic social media use. Prediction role of classmates’ support and school pressure are also discussed.</jats:p>

<jats:p>2020 will be remembered for COVID-19, a pandemic that forced the world to lock down and urged most educational providers to promptly implement e-learning solutions. In this paper, we point out some challenges faced by university teachers who had almost no earlier practice in online teaching. Nine lecturers working in different universities from Brazil, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, India, Macedonia, and Slovakia – all teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects – were interviewed to share their online teaching experiences during the COVID-19 lockdown. The aim of this introductory small-scale research paper is to provide a basis for future research regarding the influences that the COVID-19 situation has had on educational processes, as well as to assist educational providers in foreseeing and eliminating the possible problems of lecturers when establishing an online educational environment. Some conclusions are formulated from the interview survey, and possibilities for further research are described.</jats:p>
