Abstract: Roads are the most used mode of transport. Recent figures regarding transport of inland goods and passengers show that over 72% of our goods and 83% of passengers travel by road, rather than rail, air or water. Within the European road network there are around 6.1 million km of paved roads connecting people. As pavement progresses through its 20-year average performance life cycle, it changes along the way. Its appearance and functionality over time. This aging process begins immediately after construction even though these early changes are impossible to see. Roads are needed and they need to be maintained. The key task of road authorities is to develop and maintain a road network that provides unobstructed and safe transit in all kinds of weather. To be able to provide the best performance to different applications, a large variety of asphalt mixes can be used. Due to the different requirements (amount of traffic, amount of heavy vehicles, temperature, weather conditions, noise reduction requirements, etc.) the respective mix used needs to have an sufficient stiffness and resistance to deformation in order to cope with the applied pressure from vehicle, they need to have an adequate flexural strength to resist cracking caused by the varying pressures exerted on them. The following descriptions of the asphalt mixtures are based on the definitions that are given in the European Asphalt Standards EN 13108.
