Abstract: Court translation is one of the rare instances of translation that are regulated, at least partially, by the state. Court translations serve as legally valid instruments in the target country and as such pose a number of constraints on the court translator. Court translation is an important bridge between not only two different linguistic and cultural environments, but also between two different legal systems. Bearing all these constraints in mind, it is worth studying the position of court translators in specific working environments. The purpose of this paper is to gather the perceptions of key stakeholders (translators and lawyers) on the situation with court translation in Macedonia as well as the challenges stakeholders are facing. A survey has been conducted among 76 translators and 20 lawyers, which addresses issues of translation process, business aspects of court translation, training and accreditation and ethics and professional development. The results are revealing of the current views of translators on court translation in the Republic of Macedonia. The paper also provides tentative recommendations for future steps at academic and/or professional level.
