Abstract
Acquiring the phonology of a foreign language is a complex process which involves more than pronunciation error correction. It exhibits emerging systemic features and arises from interplay of factors including the similarities and differences between the native and foreign language phonology, cross-linguistic transfer and universal properties of human perception and production. This paper aims to summarize the current theoretical views on foreign language phonological development by primarily focusing on the segments and process of acquisition as well as the differences between native and non-native sound acquisition.
