Abstract: The aim of this article is to discuss the potential of physics and science Olympiads as teaching and learning resources in physics problem solving. The competence to solve problems is considered as important ability because problem solving is fundamental part of learning physics. The proccess of team selection including competition at local, regional or national level require a deep understanding of fundamental physics concepts and maturation in problem solving. The Olympiad competitions are designed to challenge students with opportunity to develop their knowledge, thinking and problem solving skills, and ultimately to test their existing knowledge and problem solving ability, both theoretically and practically in real-world situations. Run annually, most of the Olympiads are made up of two to three stages including written test (multiple choice questions/problems or theoretical problems) and practical test. Some relations between Olympiads and international studies as TIMSS and PISA are also considered.
