Abstract: The aim of this paper is to summarize the most significant studies of the good language learner of foreign languages (Rubin, 1975; Stern, 1975; Neiman et al.; 1978; Porte, 1988). The above mentioned studies aimed at identifying the learning strategies employed by successful language learners for the purpose of training less successful learners to use them, which would result in better learning outcomes. The review of the studies reveals a list of several strategies common to successful learners. These strategies include: an active approach to learning, attending both to form and meaning, willingness to communicate; awareness of the learning process and ability to apply strategies flexibly and appropriately to a certain context. The paper also discusses the benefits and shortcomings of the aforementioned studies. In line with the conclusions, relevant methodological implications are drawn.
