Abstract: In the foothills of James Joyce’s last enigmatic novel Finnegans Wake (1939), lies the hypothesis of Giambattista Vico’s cyclical account of history. Not only that Scienza Nuova (1725/1744) was one of the main influences for the structure of cyclical recurrence in Finnegans Wake, but the author of this novel deliberately provokes, compels and urges the reader to trace Vico in the very text(s) of Finnegans Wake (for instance, ‘by a commodius vicus od recirculation’ FW, 3.2 or ‘moves in vicous circles’ FW, 134.16). Both Joyce and Vico consider imagination as rewriting of memory. They emphasize the cyclical feature of historical development – the reversal out of which the history begins its course anew: ‘Teems of times and happy returns. The scim. anew. Ordovico.’ (FW, 215.22). Drawing on these references, the paper explores the traces of Vico’s writing as documented in Finnegans Wake and Joyce’s personal correspondence.
