Abstract: The interest towards small business has considerably grown in the last twenty years, being for a long time overshadowed by the global dominance of large businesses operations. The increasing knowledge and awareness among researchers has been noticed, since perceiving the vast impact of small businesses on the issues related to entreprenual activities, innovation, job creation, profitability and the economy in general. Within this analysis are covered various aspects considering small businesses, including growth and development, as well as strategies for achieving such and of course family businesses. The main aim in this PhD thesis is examining the theoretical and methodical framework, related to small business with an emphasis on growth strategy, used as a base for evaluating the extent of application of business strategies for growth of small business entities in the Republic of Macedonia. Bearing in mind the goals of this dissertation and in this respect a special emphasis is placed on small business in the context of managing growth and development, formulating growth strategies, models of development and family business. Theoretical and methodical research of different aspects related to small business is followed accordingly by empirical research, which provides information for practical implications of strategy concerning the performance of small businesses. The research effort is structured with the help of different quantitative and qualitative methods. In setting the theoretical and methodological concepts techniques such as analysis, synthesis, induction and deduction, comparative analysis and questionnaire are used. Considering quantitative techniques, descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, hypothesis testing, analysis of correlation and multicolinearity are performed. Empirical research includes more than 300 respondents, i.e. small business across Republic of Macedonia. Moreover in the sample diversity exists considering the age, industry, and ownership structure. The PhD dissertation is using simultaneously accurate theoretical concepts and practical empirical results, by which it reflects its originality and allows creating an overall picture considering strategy and small business. The utilization of current knowledge and generating a certain framework for small business in the Republic of Macedonia acquires an opportunity to understand the benefits of using strategic concepts for achieving growth in small business, which should be further inspiration for small businesses to direct their efforts toward the implementation of suitable strategic elements in their daily work operations.
