Due to God’s overwhelming excellence and transcendence, the limitations of language pose a challenge for the befitting discourse about God. The text explores the unsatisfactory (albeit wonderful and exhilarating) ways to speak about God, from Pseudo-Dionysius’ take on the divine names, to his resorting to negations, to silence, and to absolute unknowing and unsaying anything of (and about) God’s transcendent ineffability. Eriugena’s stance on God’s superessentiality is briefly tackled through his awareness of the limitations of language, the impossibility of applying Aristotelian (or any) categories to God, and the implausibility of any definition of God’s essence. The interplay between the affirmative and negative theologies traced in Pseudo-Dionysius is shown as dialectically fully developed in Eriugena, who insists on the harmonical complementarity of the seemingly opposite positions, in order to arrive to the hyperphatic (or “more-than“) formulations about God. | URI: | http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.12188/16054 |
