The territory of the National Park Mavrovo is around 73 000 hectares, covering mostly the slopes of the mountains or mountain ranges of Mt. Shar Planina, Korab (the highest peak and waterfall in Macedonia), Bistra and along the river Radika and its tributaries. Also, in the Park is allocated the Mavrovo artificial hydro accumulation. 148 identified plant communities are found in Macedonia, and in NP Mavrovo are determined 28 forest communities (of which 4 are characterized as riparian forest communities, 18 typical forest communities and 6 degraded forest formations). The subject of this PhD thesis are the natural stand dynamics of forest communities present in the territory of the Park by analyzing the areas under forest vegetation in the past and today, meaning stand development of the domicile forest communities, response to site conditions (abiotic and biotic factors) i.e. the syn-dynamic development. Furthermore, highlighted are the anthropo-zoogenic and climate factors influencing the development of the forests and vice versa, as one of the most influential environmental factors on forest stand dynamics in the area under research. Forest communities are represented on phytocoenological distribution maps within the Park boundaries. The results for the impact of abiotic and biotic factors on forest stand dynamics, particularly in areas under strict protection, suggest clear guidelines for their proper protection and guidance for the sustainable management of the National Park Mavrovo regarding the development of different forest types.
