The paper examines the criteria necessary for determining the basic verbal form of the alomorphs ofthe same verb in the Albanian language. The existence of several morphonological variants is a result of a regular vowel or consonant change of the verbal root known as alternation or apophony. Most of such morphonological changes characterized as alternations date back to the 16thcentury and have persisted to the persent day in all Albanian dialects. In view of the fact that these vowel and consonant morphonological changes carry grammatical differences, their correct interpretation requires an establishment of an alomorph which will be considered as a basic form. The author examines the opposing views on this issue in the Albanian linguistic tradition and suggests that the verbal form of the indicative present tense should be considered the basic form ofthe verb.en_US
